Terms of Use

These terms explain what SkillBoost offers, what we expect of you, and the limits of the service. By creating an account you accept them.

The service

SkillBoost is an online English learning service. It offers a Free Intro Webinar, a Full SkillBoost Express Course and a Reading Course, delivered as video lessons, exercises, tests and progress tracking, through this website and the SkillBoost iOS application.

Your account

You need an account to study. Give accurate details when you register, keep your password to yourself, and tell us if you think someone else has got into your account.

One account is for one person. Do not share your login with anyone else.

Course access and applications

The Free Intro Webinar is free and access begins as soon as you register.

The Full SkillBoost Express Course and the Reading Course are paid programmes. You apply through the app or website, we review the application, and access begins once it is approved and activated. Applying does not by itself guarantee a place.

Payment for paid courses is arranged separately with SkillBoost outside the application. No payment is taken inside the iOS application.

Course lessons may become available on a schedule rather than all at once. Where that applies, the app shows you when the next part opens.

Acceptable use

Use SkillBoost for your own learning, honestly and in good faith. Be civil in your messages to staff and to other users.

Do not attempt to break, probe, overload, reverse-engineer, decompile or gain unauthorised access to any part of the service, to its underlying software, or to any data that is not your own. Do not use the service to transmit unlawful, abusive, misleading or infringing content.

The specific and binding limits on what you may do with the course materials — the lessons, videos, exercises, tests and everything else SkillBoost provides — are set out in the sections that immediately follow, under "Ownership of the course and all materials", "Your licence to use the materials", and "Prohibited uses". Please read them carefully, because they are the heart of the agreement between us.

Ownership of the course and all materials

All content made available through SkillBoost is and remains the exclusive property of SkillBoost or of the third parties from whom SkillBoost licenses it. This includes, without limitation: the video lessons and any audio; live and recorded webinars; lesson scripts, transcripts, explanations and notes; exercises, quizzes and tests, together with their questions, options, answers and answer keys; worksheets, images, illustrations, diagrams and graphics; the software, the user interface and the visual design; the SkillBoost name, logo and branding; and the selection, sequencing, structure and arrangement of all of the above.

All of it is protected by copyright, trademark and other intellectual property laws, whether or not it carries a notice to that effect. No right, title or interest in any of it passes to you at any time. Nothing in these terms operates to transfer ownership of any material to you: you receive only the limited licence described in the next section, and only for as long as your access remains active.

Your licence to use the materials

Subject to these terms and to your account remaining in good standing, SkillBoost grants you a personal, limited, revocable, non-exclusive and strictly non-transferable licence to access and view the course materials on devices you control, for the single purpose of your own individual language learning.

This licence is granted to you, and to you alone. It may not be sold, resold, sub-licensed, assigned, transferred, lent, rented, shared or in any other way made available to any other person or entity, and it grants no right to use the materials for any purpose beyond your own personal study. Any use outside the scope of this licence is unauthorised and is a breach of these terms.

Prohibited uses

You must not, and must not permit, enable or assist any other person to do, any of the following in respect of any part of the course materials, whether for payment or free of charge, and whether in whole or in part:

Copy, reproduce, download, screen-record, screenshot, film, photograph, re-record or otherwise capture or store the materials, other than the ordinary temporary caching your own device performs in order to play a lesson to you.

Share, republish, distribute, transmit, broadcast, communicate, upload, post, mirror or otherwise make the materials available to any other person, or on any website, social network, messaging channel, file-sharing service, cloud drive, marketplace or other platform.

Sell, resell, license, sub-license, rent, lend, exchange, monetise or otherwise commercialise the materials, or access to them, or attempt to derive any commercial benefit or profit from them.

Use the materials, in whole or in part and in any form, to teach, tutor, coach, train, instruct or prepare any third party — whether one person or a group, whether paid or unpaid, whether in person or online, and whether as your own material or presented as another's.

Use the materials for any commercial purpose, or within any business, school, academy, course, channel, class or organisation, other than your own personal study.

Share, lend, sell or transfer your account or your login credentials, permit anyone else to use your account, or allow more than one person to study under a single account.

Remove, obscure, crop out or alter any copyright notice, watermark, attribution, credit or other mark of ownership; or circumvent, disable, tamper with or interfere with any security, access-control, watermarking or usage-limiting measure that protects the materials.

These restrictions apply to every copy of any material you may come to hold, by whatever means, and they continue to bind you after your access ends, for as long as the materials remain protected by law.

Enforcement, penalties and damages

The course materials are the product of substantial time, expertise and financial investment. Their unauthorised copying, sharing, distribution, resale, or use to teach or prepare others, causes SkillBoost direct and serious harm, and each such act is a material breach of these terms and an infringement of SkillBoost's intellectual property rights.

Where we identify a breach of the "Prohibited uses" section, we may, at our sole discretion and without prior notice, immediately suspend or permanently terminate your account and revoke your access to all courses, with no refund of any amount paid.

In addition to ending your access, SkillBoost reserves the right to pursue every remedy available to it in law and in equity. This may include seeking court orders (including urgent injunctions) to stop the infringing activity and to require the deletion or return of any copied materials; recovering the profits or revenue obtained through the unauthorised use; claiming compensation for the loss and damage caused to SkillBoost; and recovering the legal, investigation and enforcement costs it reasonably incurs.

You agree to indemnify and hold SkillBoost harmless against any loss, damage, liability, cost, expense or claim, including reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with your unauthorised use, reproduction or distribution of the materials, or any other breach by you of these terms. Where the law requires or permits us to report unlawful activity to the competent authorities, we may do so. All of these remedies are cumulative, and are in addition to, and not in place of, any other right or remedy available to SkillBoost.

Your content

Anything you upload — a profile photograph, an identity document, a message — remains yours. You give us permission to store and use it only to run the service as described in the Privacy Policy.

Suspension and termination

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, that is used to distribute course material, or that we are required to act on by law.

You may close your account at any time from Profile, or by writing to us. Deleting your account ends your access.

Availability and changes

We work to keep SkillBoost available, but we do not promise it will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may change, add or withdraw features as the service develops.

Learning outcomes

SkillBoost teaches English. It does not award an accredited qualification, and we do not guarantee a particular level, examination result or outcome. What you get out of it depends on the work you put in.

Liability

SkillBoost is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the service. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms we will update this page and the date shown at the top. Continuing to use SkillBoost after that means you accept the change.
